The success of Sweetgreen
The sweet green pepper bearing the Sweetgreen name started out with the Capsicum chinense. Crossing this wild pepper strain from the South American rainforest naturally with another sweet pepper was a process that took a full twenty years, because since the breeding process takes place naturally, we just had to wait and let nature take its course, year by year.
Of course, a new sweet pepper type has to meet a vast number of requirements. The consumer has demands based on flavour, the supermarket has demands based on shelf life, and the grower demands a product that is not labour intensive and resistant to disease. And Sweetgreen has it all. A sweet pepper that is easy to grow, a great shelf life and a great taste!
